CARILEC Report on Energy and Climate Ministerial

At the 5th summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago one year ago, President Barack Obama underscored that energy and climate change are among the most important issues confronting the future of the Western Hemisphere. As a response to these intertwined challenges, he proposed the creation of an Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) to – in his words – “forge progress to a more secure and sustainable future.”

 

The goal of ECPA is to foster partnerships across the Americas among government, industry and civil society to achieve low carbon economic growth and development. It is conceived as a flexible mechanism to accelerate the development and deployment of sustainable energy in the Hemisphere, and is shaped by five key areas of focus, namely:

·          energy efficiency;

·          renewable energy;

·          cleaner fossil fuels;

·          infrastructure; and

·          energy poverty.
